Keep Your Machinery Running: Maintenance Tips for Farm Implements
Investing in quality machinery.. whether mowers, rakes, balers or loaders.. is only the first step. Regular maintenance ensures reliability, safety, and longevity.
Follow Manufacturer Guidelines
Always refer to the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule: check gearboxes, PTO shafts, grease points, hydraulic systems, bolts and moving parts regularly. Neglecting maintenance often leads to breakdowns and costly downtime.
Clean After Use & Check for Wear
After each use: especially after working in wet or muddy conditions.. clean off dirt and debris. Inspect tines, blades, welds and moving parts for wear or damage. Replace worn parts before the next season begins.
Store Properly: Shelter from Elements
If possible, store implements under cover to protect from rain, frost, or sunlight. This prolongs paint, reduces rusting, and preserves hydraulic and mechanical components.
Use Correct Tractor Settings & Hydraulics
Make sure the tractor’s hydraulic pressure, PTO rpm, and hitch settings match the implement’s requirements. Incorrect settings or overload can cause premature wear or damage.
Schedule Regular Servicing & Spare Parts Checks
Keep spare parts on hand: bearings, belts, blades, tines.. and service periodically. A well-maintained implement lasts longer and performs more reliably, saving costs in the long run.
